In June 1948, HMT Empire Windrush was boarded by more than 800 people from the Caribbean to come to England to help build the country after the Second World War.
Many of the people from the Caribbean that accepted the invitation to work and live in the country were from the sunny island of Jamacia. The Vineries owned Windrush event was an opportunity for Lewisham Homes residents during the 50s, 60s and 70s living in sheltered housing schemes to come together and celebrate this shared history. This festive occasion was opened to older people from different backgrounds and communities.
The event showcased Caribbean culture and the legacy of the Windrush generation in the UK today. With a range of Caribbean cuisines by the caterers, Scotch Bonnet, residents were able to reminisce about the Windrush generation and how they paved the way for future generations.
The event was supported by Christina Israel of 60up CIC and LTF’s consultant, Joy Burnett. Secondly, it was funded by Lewisham Homes Community Investment Fund as part of the association’s grant funded project, Living Well.
